Hawker Caught on Tape Cheating Customer, Foreign Netizens: “This is China”
Nov 03, 2015 By eChinacities.com

A female hawker was caught on video switching a bag of dates for lower quality fruit when her customer turned his back. Hong Kong’s Ming Pao reported that the video has caught the attention of Western social media sites, racking up tens of thousands of views and 12,000 shares.  A number of foreign Netizens commented on the video, “This is China.”

The video shows the female street hawker selling green dates. She has several extra bags of dates hidden in a large basket. A customer comes up to the stand and she helps him pick out the dates himself, so that he can choose good-quality fruit. However, when she has the chance, she furtively switches his bag out for a bag of similar size.

Foreign Netizens guessed that the dates in the pre-packaged bags were of lower quality than the ones displayed. Others said that the dates were already cheap, and the hawker is morally wrong to cheat her customers for such a small profit.

One foreign Netizen said frankly that they know that Mainland shopkeepers are often dishonest with their marketing, and that they would choose to patronize big companies instead to avoid being cheated. Another said that the video shows exactly why many are hesitant to buy from street vendors when traveling to the Mainland.

The-Final-Say

Not necessarily. Once, I bought a Motorola E680i phone at the electronics market, right before smart phones exploded in China. The seller was a friend of my neighbor so I trusted him because I knew my neighbor wouldn't let me down. The camera didn't work so I took back to the seller to get it fixed or replaced. They adjusted the camera and after 1 week, it stopped working again. They had given me a phone with the original parts stripped and as a result, it was not quality. They ordered the part and I hounded them almost a month before threatening them and finally the part "suddenly arrived" to the store that day and they replaced the camera for me. After another week it broke again and I got angry and went back with my neighbor friend and they said it wasn't their responsibility. I started to threaten to report them to authorities for shoddy business dealings when some goons suddenly showed up looking like they were ready to have revenge for the Opium Wars or something. The only reason nothing further happened was because my neighbor's face was on the line and he told them he was responsible to bring me there and that he had promised me a quality product, which wasn't the case. The kid refused to refund me and I went home and told my neighbor that I was very pissed and needed to fix this phone. I took to Motorola's tech place and they installed a real camera for 150RMB. Some time later, I met the neighbor and told him what had happened and he apologized profusely and even shoved 150RMB in my pocket. We still kept our friendship strong. I had to take the money because he wouldn't accept my disappointment and I had a working phone which was not bad once fixed, until the iPhones came to China. Either way, the important thing is if you go to these unofficial places to buy anything, you must be careful or you will be taken. Even if you take your laptop to a tech shop, it best be a trusted worker or never let it out of your sight just in case you find your real parts swapped out without your knowledge. Though the situation regarding vegetables is not as common, be especially careful when buying electronics. Even if you take a friend, there is no 100% guarantee that things will work out as they should. But at least when you get upset for the money spent and the product received, you don't need to also negotiate terms with goons because 10 vs 1 is never good.
