Spreading Internet Rumors Could Lead to 7 Years in Prison

Those who spread false information on Weibo, WeChat, and other social media sites and blogs could be sentenced up to seven years in prison under a new amendment to the Criminal Law of the PRC. The new amendment takes effect on November 1.

The amendment states that fabricating disasters, police intelligence, etc. on websites and social media, knowingly, and deliberately spreading false information online and seriously disrupting social order could mean three to seven years of imprisonment or detention.

What happens if the rumor is true but not necessarily a popular one with certain sections of society? The whole thing is nicely vague and open to extreme interpretation, depending on what the whim of the day. Keep it up guys - you are a shining example of justice!
