Student Collapses and Dies during Nanjing University Sports Test

Student Collapses and Dies during Nanjing University Sports Test
Oct 26, 2015 By eChinacities.com

A junior at Nanjing University died after collapsing 700 meters into a 1,000 meter sports test this past Saturday.

A student volunteering the event told the media that he saw one of his overweight classmates pass out during the race. He was “convulsing, and foaming at the mouth.” When the volunteer student caught up to him, the collapsed student was pale and motionless.

The university doctor gave the student CPR for ten minutes until the ambulance arrived. In that time, the student did not regain consciousness. The student was sent to Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Reports show that the student was 168 cm tall and weighed 92 kilograms. The boy’s weight made it difficult for the doctor to perform CPR. He was only 20 years old.

Ya, it doesn't sound like a fitness problem. If you're fat you don't just die from running 700m, you might pass out or give up. Sounds like he had a more serious condition, perhaps he was embarrassed to bring it up and tried to run anyway.

athletics have always gone hand in hand with academics. Have you heard the term student athlete? The purpose of athletics in education (Physical Education) is to prevent 20 year old overweight kids from dying when they finally get the motivation to do some exercise.
