Mr. Xiao from Guangyuan rose to Internet fame when he was ripped off by a Qingdao restaurant over National Day. The price of shrimp had been listed at 38 Yuan per plate on the menu, but when the bill came, the shrimp were billed at 38 Yuan per piece. The boss of the seafood restaurant was fined 90,000 Yuan by the local government and made to refund Xiao.

An anonymous Qingdao entrepreneur who asked to be called “Qingdao Beach,” in the media, visited Guangyuan to apologize to Xiao and presented him with 50,000 Yuan in cash. He also invited Xiao to come back to Qingdao to experience “Shandong hospitality.”

“Qingdao Beach,” said that he is an ordinary Qingdao citizen who loves his city. He said that he was very upset after hearing about Xiao’s encounter in Qingdao and wanted to personally give his condolences.

“I am mainly in business, but have helped develop the tourism industry for the past 21 years. I hope guests are happy when they come and have fun.” He said that the story about the over-priced shrimp made him “very sad.”

“Qingdao Beach” said that he wanted to donate under a pseudonym so people did not think that he was promoting himself. He also declined to give the name of his company.

haha used, "a pseudonym so people did not think that he was promoting himself." But willing to get his picture in the paper, which all of his friends will see. I.E. pretending to not care about face acting has a multiplier effect. I really hope this guy just loves his hometown and works with the tourism board, and that this is an actual generous gesture. But, China has made me cynical.

I sincerely hope this was an act of generosity. But part of me thinks that local tourism departments just took the 90K Fine, redistributed 40K among themselves, and then used the 50K as a marketing stunt. This guy works for the government.
