Man Drinks Himself to Death with Friends, Friends Forced to Compensate His Family
Oct 20, 2015 By eChinacities.com

A man’s friends were forced to compensate his family after he drank himself to death in their company in a Nanchong, Sichuan bar. The media reported on the court’s decision this past Friday. The six defendants were made to pay the man, Yang’s family 125,914 Yuan.

Yang Liu, the wife of the deceased man received a call from her husband’s friend on the evening of January 18, 2015. The friends had been drinking together at a restaurant, and Yang had drank himself into a coma. His friends took him home, and his family rushed him to the hospital.

Yang remained in the coma until 3:00 the following afternoon. He died in the hospital soon after from acute heart failure caused by alcohol poisoning.

After the incident, Liu Yang’s wife and family repeatedly asked Yang’s six friends for compensation with no avail. Finally, the family took the six men to court.

The court ruled that Yang’s six friends should have warned him and had caused him to drink himself to death, and are therefore liable for his death. Yang had a previous heart condition which his friends knew about, but encouraged him to drink. His friends also sent him home when he needed medical attention and did not take timely and effective measures to try to save him.

Three of the defendants were made to compensate the family 25,183.60 Yuan each, and the other three were made to pay 18,887.70 Yuan.

The drinking culture here makes no sense. I drink a little, but they never stop. Who needs the hangover?

If anyone should be paying compensation how about the bar? Maybe cut the guy off at a certain point? Back home they're too anal about over serving anyone who might be having fun but at a certain point the bar needs to cut the guy off.

Yeah back home the barkeep could say "ok buddy, you've had enough." But this isn't back home. This is far from back home.

If you've ever been to a Chinese bar, you would know that this would not be very practical.

Samsara

I have no sympathy for anyone involved in China's moronic drinking culture. If a Chinese man drinks himself to death and his "friends" get punished I consider that a Win-Win scenario. --- Chinese "men" need to collectively grow some backbone. Drinking alcohol because you are scared of losing face doesn't make you a man. Self-assurance does. --- Oh, what the hell am I talking about. If you're a Chinese man, drink yourself to death. Your wife and kids would rather the compensation payout than a fat, incompetent bootlicker anyway.

But if they didn't drink with him they wouldn't be giving him face and would therefore be in the wrong. I wonder if the dead guy was bought up by his family asking "how many beers can you drink?..I can drink X amount" and saying things like "if you don't drink with me you're not being manly" , and bragging about how much baijiu he could drink. This is one of the things I find to be pathetic in Chinese culture.. the complete lack of personal responsibility and a legal system that seems to encourage it, often followed by greed and blame shifting.

And for me it's one more reason not to socialize with Chinese people. I don't want to be held accountable for other people's stupidity.

Yeah I agree. On one hand, if they were good friends and really knew about his heart condition, they might try to stop him. On the other hand, he's an adult and responsible for his own actions. The guy passed out, how could his friends know he was having a medical emergency?
