Foreigner Busted for Evading Subway Fare in Shanghai, Fined 84 Yuan
Oct 15, 2015 By eChinacities.com

A foreign man was caught trying to jump the gate at Shanghai’s Changshou Road Station this past Saturday, and was fined 84 Yuan.

Metro security saw the man jump the gate and immediately stopped him. A security staff member asked him if he could speak Chinese, presented their credentials, and told him that jumping the gate constitutes fare evasion. The fine for fare evasion on the Shanghai metro is an 84 Yuan replacement ticket.

“No matter what nationality you are, you must abide by Chinese laws when you are in China. You have violated our metro traffic regulations, and need to pay a fine of 84 Yuan,” a security staff member told him.

The man told police that he did not have any money, and could not pay the fine. Security staff, thinking the foreigner was trying to evade the fine, said it did not make if he had no money, he still had to pay. Metro security then called over the policeman on duty in the station to help sort the matter out.

Seeing the policeman, the man quickly called his friend for help. 15 minutes later, his friend arrived at the station and agreed to pay for the replacement ticket. However, they did not understand why the ticket cost 84 Yuan.

The fine for fare evasion on the Shanghai metro is equal to six times the maximum fare of 14 Yuan, which adds up to 84 Yuan. Security explained to the man’s friend, and the friend paid the fine in full.

Shanghai’s metro management department said that this is not the first case of foreigners being caught for attempted fare evasion, and that those caught trying to jump to gate will be punished “regardless of nationality.”

Tut tut, caught out in the Shanghai metro! Things must be getting tough if you can no longer afford the 4 kuai fare. But yeah, hilariously propagandist article lol...

Only 84 yuans ? ? ? In Finland we need to pay 120 euros (~870 yuans) for idiotic things like this. This guy got it way too easy.

The guy's a twat for doing that but not really news-worthy. If we write in the paper about how the Chinese always fair-dodge then the paper will be a hundred pages long.

If he'd been dressed differently he would have got away with it. The shoulder length hair, the open shirt over the skater-dude t-shirt, the backwards baseball cap... He's obviously set off their douche-bag alarm and they've come running. Foreigners; they come over here, they take our women and they evade our fares.

What he did is wrong but this is nowhere near as interesting as the article I recently read about certain attractions in Thailand making "Chinese Only" toilets. Not that I want to lump all Chinese into the same category but I don't want to feel like the action of one petty foreigner should apply to all of us but the way Echinacities posts it, I certainly feel like we are all being singled out. What if this "hippy" came from Asia? Does this mean Europeans, Africans, South and North Americans all need to be reminded not to avoid paying for the Subway?

Exactly! Was this article written by some button pusher in the cop/visa bureau meant to pass off blame or fear on expats? Well I got news for you, most humans travelling in another country do know how to handle themselves in a reasonable manner and would not get caught doing something embarrassing, especially around China. Thats just stupid! Should we expect a visa crackdown soon? Next we will be reading articles about boring CCTV International TV Show hosts wanting to "sweep out the foreign trash" followed by a circulating video that has been recycled several times before about a drunkened foreigner who obviously thought it might be fun to violate a woman at the lit up entranceway of some subway in downtown Beijing of the People's Republic of China, in front of many filming phone cameras and swearing locals who feel they must defend their country from the foreign invaders? This is exactly the kind of journalism that Echinacities, an expat website, needs to keep us all in line and keep the xenophobia running high now that the pre military parade and pre October holiday foreign rascal roundup has ended. Let me guess, the stock market is going to bottom out again or someone is going to loot a fish from the sea soon and guns will be raised, loaded. One idiot decides to jump the fence and we all needed to be reminded that we should obey the laws in China? How about the rich that fly to other lands to bear a second child with hope that in 18 years same said kid can help immigrate mother while the man can remain and have his fun with young models? Please, is this what Echinacities has come to now? "A foreign man" tried to jump the Subway. If that is all we foreigners are trying to do, I feel glad because all one has to do is search about the man from Ghana who recently had his family jewels hacked off by a local girl who went manic and asked goons to help when he decided it was time to move on to see that a random foreigner doing such a petty thing really is not so newsworthy afterall. Oh yeah, that poor dude has his photos circulating all over the internet, like it was he who did the crime and not the girl. By the way, 84 RMB is nothing. If you are abroad and you get caught spitting, tossing rubbish on the ground, or smoking around others, you face far stiffer penalties. What a joke!

What a moron, some people really need to stop infecting the human gene pool. One of the only things that works well in China is the public transport- it's clean, efficient and dirt cheap. All that embarrassment over a couple of kuai.
