Hong Kong Guide Locks Chinese Tour Group in Jewelry Store, Forces Them to Spend

A large tour group from Xi’an was locked in a jewelry store in Hong Kong for three hours until all of the tourists purchased an item.

The 43 tourists were on a tour sponsored by Xianyang International Travel Service. On September 19, the tour group were forced to spend money at a jewelry store by their Hong Kong tour guide. “We were taken to a jewelry store, the door was closed for three hours, everyone had to buy something in order to leave.”

Yesterday morning, the tour group returned to Xi’an, and complained to the local agency. The tour had been a “zero-cost tour,” in which travelers do not pay, and that spending on the tour is “voluntary.” However, if travelers do not spend enough money on their trip, the agency loses money.

A representative from the travel company said that they had gotten in touch with their Hong Kong guide after the incident. The agency will have a new policy in which the Hong Kong local guide will be tipped 100 RMB a person by travelers to avoid such incidents. The representative added that they have collected receipts from the travelers and will help them return the items from the jewelry store.

Stiggs

Wait, what? The tourists will need to 'tip' the tour guide 100RMB to avoid being detained and extorted for money? something that just can't be legal let alone a good deal. I know the tour was supposed to be zero cost so you really can't expect a lot but still... what sort of idiot goes on something like that, let alone passively accepts it when someone locks a door and demands you pay money for overpriced shit to be released. How is that company even still in business?
