Apparently, catching wild geckos can land you in prison in China. Three men were detained in Jining, Shandong, for illegally hunting geckos.

The three men, Li Zhen, Li Ming, and Li Chun, confessed that they often caught geckos in their spare time to sell them for extra cash. Geckos are occasionally used as an ingredient in Chinese medicine. The men claimed that they did not know that hunting geckos was against the law.

Police said that while geckos are not a nationally protected species, there are certain types of animals that it is against Chinese criminal law to capture more than 20 in the wild without permission. These species, which include common sparrows, frogs, toads, snakes, weasels, and hedgehogs, have economic value, scientific value, or are environmentally beneficial.

Capturing more than 50 of these species is a major criminal offense, and more than 100 is an extremely serious criminal offense.

The men arrested in Shandong were charged with capturing more than 20 wild geckos.
