Truck Driver Unexpectedly Runs into Lion on Henan Highway
Sep 09, 2015 By eChinacities.com

A truck driver in Henan was shocked when he hit a lion in the middle of the highway. Zhou Shifu was turning into a service area when a lion suddenly jumped out in front of his truck.

Zhou heard a bang, and realized he had hit something, or someone. Not knowing what it was, he started to climb out of the truck. Then, he saw a lion limping away from his truck. Terrified, Zhou stayed in the cab of the truck, and quickly called the police.

A highway patrol brigade responded to the call. When they arrived on the scene, the lion was only 500 meters away from the service area. Not knowing what to do, the highway patrol called in a special police SWAT team.

The SWAT team arrived on the scene quickly. Because of the number of people in the service area, and the absence of a tranquilizer gun, the police decided to kill the lion. It took more than 20 bullets to bring the lion down.

As of press time, no one has claimed ownership of the lion. Hefei Zoo deputy director Jiang Hao guessed that, “it could have been left behind during transport.” “When vehicles transport, sometimes the cages are not very good and the animals fall out.”

The-Final-Say

20 bullets? If it were Zimbabwe, people would be asking for the heads of all involved for its killing. Seriously? I read somewhere that an American dentist took out Cecil the Lion with only a bow an arrow. Sorry for this lion though, what a magnificent creature to be wasted. I am never gonna go to Henan again, lions running loose at night like that, drivers who cannot handle their vehicles safely, cops that get crazy with their guns when in doubt of how to handle their problems. How did a lion get into Henan anyway? What, did Aslan get a little too excited and accidently misplace one of Narnia's citizens? R.I.P. lion!

I understand and agree with those who say that it is a tragedy any time a creature as magnificent as a lion meets an untimely end. I understand the rush to point the blame at the authorities, too. But this time, the authorities seem to have tried to do the right thing. A live lion -- actually, an injured and thus extra dangerous lion -- was on the loose in a populated area, and nobody had sufficient tranquilizers. That lion would have hit the concrete no matter which country it might have been in. If you must blame someone, blame whoever had been ineptly keeping it.

Let me get this straight. The shocked driver called the police. The shocked police called the SWAT. The dumbfounded SWAT decided to shoot it. They decided to shoot it though it was limping AWAY and likely near death. Limping, dying, terrified, mistreated (you know how Chinese are with animals) innocent little kitty... and because it MIGHT suddenly regenerate like the WOlverine and go on a killing rampage, they decided to put 20 bullets into it to put it down?! Did one boy fire 20 shots or did the entire team take turns to see which would be the one to kill it? After all that, no one claimed responsibility for how the lion got there. There's another shock (sarcasm). The zoo deputy director guessed it *could have* been left behind during transport because of the poor quality animal cages that didn't pass inspection (most likely the reason). "sometimes the cages aren't good and the animals fall out?" Are you joking? You'd send a tiger, a lion, a few gators and probably some rhinos on a trip knowing they might escape? Ugh. I don't have anything else to say.

It's not that bad when you consider they were probably shooting over their shoulders as they ran the other way.

That's just so sad, terrible for the lion to end up being shot to death! What a waste of precious animals. They couldn't think of anything else?!
