Man Pretends to be Stranded Businessman with Stolen Wallet in Shanghai Scam

A Shanghai man was recently caught scamming passengers at a metro station by pretending to have been robbed and asking to borrow money to get home.

An elderly woman reported that a smart-looking businessman carrying a briefcase stopped her in People's Square subway station and asked her for help. He said that he was in Shanghai for business and had had his wallet stolen. Therefore, he could not get home. He asked the woman to borrow some money so that he could get home. When she obliged, he carefully wrote down her phone number, and repeatedly promised to pay her back. The elderly woman believed him and gave him 50 Yuan so that he could get home without any problems.

The man, surnamed Fang, a farmer from Anhui, did not realize that police were already surveying following a string of complaints. Police on the scene arrested Fang, and the elderly woman realized she had been scammed.

Fang had been scamming passengers on the Shanghai subway in the same manner. He was usually able to get 10 to 100 Yuan per victim, adding up to a few hundred Yuan per day. Most passengers were not aware that they were scammed, or the amount that they lost was so small that they did not report the crime.
