China Launches Investigation to Rid Country of Smuggled Frozen Meat
Jul 13, 2015 By eChinacities.com

After “zombie meat,” leftover from WWII stockpiles was recently sold in China, the public realized the true extent of China's frozen food smuggling problem. Data from China's General Administration of Customs shows that there have been 141 cases of smuggling involving 420,000 tons of frozen food from the beginning of this year until June 23. The number of cases has increased 1.3 fold, while the amount of smuggled goods has increased 2.7 fold.

The Ministry of Public Security and the General Administration of Customs issued a notice on July 12 regarding the smuggling of frozen meat. The notice called for an inspection in all parts of the country of the source, quantity, and sales location of frozen meat sold since 2014.

The investigation will include cold storage warehouses in Beijing, Tianjin, Liaoning, Shanghai, Anhui, Fujian, Shandong, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan and other provinces (as well as other autonomous regions and municipalities).

If the quantity of meat sold recorded by the warehouses is incorrectly recorded, the source of the meat is not given, or if any records or results have been tampered with or falsified, those responsible will be dealt with severely and the results will be posted for the public.
