Antibiotics a Serious Pollutant in China

Antibiotics a Serious Pollutant in China

A ten-year study on antibiotic use in China conducted by the Chinese Academy of Sciences had shocking results. The research showed that 160, 000 metric tons of antibiotics were used in China in 2013, equating to half of all antibiotics used in the world. Over 50, 000 metric tons of those antibiotics were released into the environment.

The research was conducted over a ten-year period in 58 river basins and gathered a broad array of information on antibiotic use and pollution. The results were drawn up into a map which made a visual representation of antibiotic pollution around China.

The map showed that Guangzhou, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Hebei, and other developed economic areas all have serious levels of pollution from antibiotics. In heavily populated areas, the amount of antibiotics in river basins are six times the amount of that in Western countries.

Pig farms were the main culprit as they usually add antibiotics to pig feed and animal drinking water. The researchers detected at least ten different antibiotics in one sample of animal feed.

One expert expressed his shock saying, “Usually if something happens, adding one antibiotic is good enough… but using ten different kinds is simply frightening.”

I believe this is one of the biggest threat facing mankind today. If wreckless antibiotics use isn't stopped (not only in China, but around the world), its bye bye, BIG TIME. I dont think people understand the significance of this problem.

I always have to chuckle at how insular and xenophobic Chinese are...their worst enemy is usually themselves. Chinese yaodians have always scared the crap out of me. Things that should definitely be given with a doctor's supervision are just handed out OTC like candy. This would be terrifying enough if we were talking about a rational population here...but these are nongs.I can only pray that they usually opt for hocus pocus TCM stuff most of the time. Even if you factor that, though--when the superbug strikes, they don't even have basic hygienic standards to hold it in check. And these people are scared that they will catch Ebola from a healthy South African!
