There are at least 13 million cases of induced abortion in China every year, more than any other country, according to the Chinese media. There are at least 13 million cases of induced abortion in China every year, more than any other country, according to the Chinese media. That figure is not inclusive of the ten million abortion cases that are done with pharmaceuticals or where it is conducted in private hospitals. Half of the women that have abortions are young and unmarried.

In a 2014 survey questioning teenagers about reproductive health, 13% of teenage female respondents reported that they had gotten pregnant before, and 48% of teenage males reported that they had caused somebody to get pregnant. The data showed that unplanned pregnancy isn’t something that numbers in just a few cases anymore.

In a different survey that questioned teenagers in Shanghai, over five percent of middle school students responded that they had engaged in sexual intercourse before. For high school students, up to 15% had previously engaged in sexual intercourse. As for university students in Shanghai, up to 25% had done so. Unplanned pregnancy had a high rate of occurrence for most of those respondents.

For Chinese who have already had an abortion, the chances of them having another one are growing higher. On a similar note, last year it was reported in the media that a 23-year-old girl had already had 23 abortions.

The number of abortions amounts to 1% of the population. For a country that adopts a single child policy either their birth control measures are extraordinary effective or there is something wrong with the figures.

One reason why life is so cheap here, single child policy and abortions.

Just reading through the above statistics, it seems more than a little unreliable. 13% of girls admitted to getting pregnant but 48% of boys. Seems the truth might lie in between somewhere. Either way unwanted pregnancies is becoming a bigger problem by the year in China. So I have to agree with kasuka91 that safe sex education is dearly needed.

How comprehensive is the sex ed curriculum here in China? Nowadays it's probably just better to tackle the issue head on, the cat is out of the bag! The whole idea of preserving sex for marriage and treating it merely as a necessary evil for reproduction has just...just become so fossilized and outdated for your typical urban centre in 2015. Let it go, move on, and promote safe sex!
