The much respected research organization Pew released a new bloc of opinion polling research on Tuesday, detailing over 40 countries’ opinions towards China and the United States.
The results of the research showed that over 48% respondents believe that China will surpass America in superpower status, and only a few think otherwise. The only countries which believe that China won’t surpass American superpower are countries whose respondents come from America, Indonesia, the Philippines, Japan, Vietnam, Brazil, and Uganda.
On the contrary, over 69% of poll respondents held America in friendly regards, whereas only 55% paid China the same sentiment.
Feelings between Americans and Chinese are indicatively worse, however. Results showed that only 44% of Chinese view America with a friendly attitude, while only 38% of Americans view China in a friendly way.
The Pew survey polled over 45,000 individuals aged 18 years or older.

What does that even mean... "power"? Seems something that should have been defined in the article. Does this even translate to a higher standard of living? Even if they are most powerful, who cares... if yours country is still a dump and you're not enjoying life, basically?

Under what criteria? In order to be the world's superpower, you at least need to have clean water! Not to mention, innovation (not waiting for other countries to invent, then stealing "copying" their work), human rights, cultural influence (not just bragging about it), and the list goes on. The only thing I see China trumping any other country with is their per capita GDP. And, if that happens, it's because they outsourced their education system to countries like America. Actually, here's what I think will happen... Cultural revolution within China long before superpower status happens. Why? Because they do outsource their education system. They import western culture and values. Therefore, if China reaches superpower status, it's based on the backbone of western ideology, not Chinese ideology.

Experts say that in the next decade or so, China will become the No 1 economic power, but it still remains far behind the US in military terms. This is a long game. China will not 'rule the world' until it can hold sway over world culture in the way that the USA has for the last century. China's rise to power will be capped by linguistics, culture, values, openness... That is not to say that China will not become the dominant Asia power - it probably already is. China hasn't had the capability to dominate anyone for a long time because it is run so badly. It's trying to make up for it, but I still doubt that they have the capability to be honest If China started a war with anybody serious a lot of Chinese people would want to attack the government rather than help 'the war effort'

This is a ridiculous statement. China will never even come close... and you want to know why? Communication - Chinese have HORRIBLE communication when it comes to problem solving, tactics and logistics. This is essential to win any battle. Organization - Obviously ties hand in hand with communication, which is why Chinese are take something incredibly simple and somehow make it complex. Like pulling a U-turn in the middle of the street during rush hour traffic rather than at designated spots. Innovation - China really just steals and copies technology. How can you be first if you are always the second one to grab something from someone else? People can believe whatever they want from the media. I see these things here on a daily basis. China would LOSE... and LOSE harshly if it went up against the U.S. and no, I am not an American.

Stealing technology has been happening since the invention of the wheel. Why was the US and Russia the first to go into space and to the moon? Because they had better technology and were smarter? No, because they both smuggled Nazi scientists out of Germany after WW2 to work on their own rockets. All the scientists who worked on the A-bomb were foreigners!! Then they all went to work at universities passing on their knowledge. Why is it when China starts doing things the whole world has been doing for a thousand years, it's suddenly wrong?

Let's be realistic, China would have to be born again under a totally different political system to even have the slightest chance to win a war against the U.S.(btw I'm not American either). Anyways, I agree that stealing technology has been happening all over the world but at least Americans/Europeans make sure they improve upon a new idea and come up with higher standards than....let's say...China. Another important aspect is that they cleverly know how to attract "smart" people from all over the world to help them develop new technology while China only knows how to suppress or lose such people. Plus we can't forget that Soldiers Win Wars and many Chinese people lack character, brotherhood and patriotism...it's very seldom we see the common Chinese helping their brothers/sisters in need, all we see is indifference. So I'm with Robk on this one, there's just NO way at all.

It wasn't that I was saying China would win the war against the US. My point was that neither would the US win. China's military is much more technologically advanced than you think. Enough so that the Pentagon released a report two months stating just how much they fear China's military can overcome almost all of the US' so-called smart weapons. China's military is about defense. And if you can defend yourself from an enemy while the enemy is still far out at sea, then you will not be defeated. And you'd be surprised just how much China has "improved" technology since they "stole" it. But it is this derogatory attitude that most of you have against China that blinds you from seeing just where this country is headed. If you take off the hate-glasses for5 minutes, you just might surprise yourself. Oh, and by the way, if there ever was a war between the US and China, or any US puppet and China, Putin made it clear two years ago that his nation stands with China.

It seems you put a lot of faith in some very contestable statements without really questioning their legitimacy or the motives behind them. Whenever the U.S release these reports its usually abt trying to increase their military budget.Fear mongering regarding Russia, Iraq, and now China is a common tactic linking to homeland security and the need to increase spending. You claim China is more militarily capable than we think (implying you know more than we do -lol), I won't deny there is some truth in this but its not all abt technology its abt being able to deploy it with skilled and experienced generals. China has none. I won't bother with your other opinions as I'm sure you can't be swayed and I have no interest in trying. Let me say this, what is most offense to me and many others is not what you say but how you say it. I agree with Knightly, China more than likely has better weapons and defenses that they let on. Yes, they have a huge army and backing from a few other countries with larger armies (Russia, North Korea). But I have seen their military training first hand, it is very different than Western methods and horribly lacks in the areas of teamwork, resourcefulness to a situation, independent thought and being able to act as both a single unit or separately. There is... and always will be one part of Chinese culture that will sabotage the Chinese people... face. Not being able to admit fault in a group or to others means you can never improve (this is because Chinese are VERY emotional people). "Thinking" or "acting" that you are constantly without fault sets you up failure compared to those that seek out weakness in their ranks and purge it.
