I just stated the facts. The Pew study is based on opinion. I believe that opinion is only worthy when it's based in fact. I didn't give my opinion on American foreign policy.

I don't think most countries believe that. Sure, most Chinese believe it but only because of the way they they've been programmed. What concerns me is the speed in which they're setting up (potential) military bases in the Western Pacific. For me the 64 dollar question is how long before someone puts their foot down.

No, China will never overtake the US as a military superpower, nor do they have to or need to or want to. The US military is based on attack (yes, the irony is they still call it the "Department of Defense), of projecting its power around the world. China's military is based on defense. And when you know exactly what you have to defend against, it is very easy (and cheap) to mount this defense. And how do they know what to defend against? Because ever since the atom bomb, the US has showcased every new weapon they created, hoping to incite fear, and it is very easy for a military as advanced technologically as China's (Can't wait for the ill-informed to rant against that statement) is to invent something that will defeat all of the US' weapons. But the number one reason why China never has to fear a war with the US? Because the US will never start a war or attack a country that they believe has the ability to fight back. They will only attack a small, seemingly defenseless, isolated country they feel they can defeat easily. Never mind history having proven them wrong (Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan), they will still only attack small nations. Instead, they will continue to try to surround China with hostile nations in the same way they tried to "contain" the USSR during the cold war, and will try to push one of these nations to engage China in a war. Luckily for us, Chairman Xi and our leaders in Beijing are smarter than that, and are protecting China in more ways than most people realize. And now a word from the peanut gallery in the replies:

And they still lost. Vietnam still went communist. And the supposed "Domino-theory" never quite panned out. The point, as you so obviously missed it, is that military superiority will not win wars. The Vietnamese proved that against the French, the Japs, and the US. And in Iraq's case, the vast majority of the troops went into hiding until Saddam was toppled, because they weren't going to die for him, and once he was gone, they began (and are still) fighting for their homeland. It doesn't matter what the US did in a war, how much they blew a country up. The fact is, they lost. Admit it. Get over it. And my original point remains clear: The US will never attack a country they feel can fight back. Will China suffer great losses in a war? Obviously. But so will the US. But all of this will be moot once China backs the Yuan with gold and becomes the world power in every way possible.

Vietnam was a war intended to be sustained for a prolonged period, not won. US army rules of engagement make it abundantly clear: not allowed to pursue into laos territory, not allowed to destroy anti-aircraft until proven operational, forbidden to attack key enemy facilities without written permission from high command, etc. 50,000 US soldiers died, countless millions of Vietnamese died. it was a slaughterhouse - they butchered them for target practice and labeled it a defeat to mask their atrocities. napalm destroyed huge areas of jungle. and as for China having a "defensive" military, yes, but it's not as noble as you'd make us believe. they have a million incompetent showcase troops who report sick for every war game exercise, but their actual defense is a massive stockpile of dronestrike clusterbombs. the world tried to ban these weapons because of their disgusting collateral damage, but US and China persisted in using them. So, the Communist party is saying that if their hegemony is threatened, they will kill every civilian (Chinese or otherwise) in every city they can reach. It's far worse than anything the US has ever done, includingthe A bomb.

Um, let's see: Japan attacked first, Germany declared war on the US after. Now, let's look at facts, not BS in history books. Russia won WW2. 27 million Russians killed, and before you say they were killed by Stalin's "Not one step back" policy, only 135,000 died in this way. At any time during WW2, Russia was regularly battling over 200 German divisions. The US and England and everyone else? 10 German divisions at the most. While Russia fought the Germans alone, what did the US do? Oh, right, went to Africa first, then went to Sicily and Italy. Only after Russia was pushing the A Germans back to Germany did they open the second front in Europe. And Japan? Japan surrendered because 1.5 million soviets were sweeping down through Manchuria to drive the Japs out. THIS is what led to the Jap surrender, not the bomb. And in case you missed it, I'm talking about post-WW2. America has never attacked an enemy that they thought could fight back. And you can badmouth the Chinese military all you want. But when duty calls, they are there, as they proved in Korea, when they fought the "Mighty US War Machine" to a stand-off. Vietnam also beat them. Face it, the US could NOT beat the Vietnamese. Yes, the French were there for 100 years. And the Vietnamese kicked their asses. Look at your history books. As the great Vietnamese general said, "We knew they couldn't stay here forever." But of course, you will never admit the US lost Vietnam, the same way you won't admit you lost Iraq and Afghanistan. You won? Oh, is that why an American can't travel anywhere to the middle east now without getting their head chopped off? And I understand economics on a much wider scale than you can, and so does every other country in the world, considering how much their kicking down the door to get into the AIIB and get away from the IMF and World Bank. You need to get your mind out of the western way of thinking about economics and you'll be better able to understand just what is happening. Oh, and it was Britain who launched the opium wars.

Ah yes, the rumors of a growing superpower! Enormous factories supported by what is essentially slave labor, almost two billion people working in unison to build a massive megalopolis? Anyone who has actually been to China and witnessed the enormously idiotic bureaucracy, apathetic robotic lifestyle, and money-hungry short term vision has quickly realized how blatantly inefficient everything is in China.

China has surpassed the U.S. in so many ways now. The world already calls on China for assistance in such things as disaster relief and non military conflict resolution. The U.S. has become so irrelevant it is trying to stoke wars everywhere from the Middle East to Ukraine to scs.

In case you forgot, the Crimean people VOTED to stay with Russia. They knew the Ukrainians were being foolish to go with the west, so they voted to stay with Russia. Putin did not send one single soldier, tank, or fighter jet to Crimea, yet is demonized by the US as a "Bully" a "tyrant" and "disruptive to the region." While no mention of illegal US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is ever made.

Opinions are not reality. And I think the USA is quite happy with the diversion. They put a lot of effort into convincing the world they are not Big Bad. Who do you believe is richer; The upstart peasant flashing his brand-name merchandise hoping you will respect him, or the factory owner who dresses like his workers? This sort of stuff is rocket science to an average Chinese. But be proud of your image, China, and keep telling people "my culture is mysterious".
