Summer Blockbusters: 8 Must-See Movies Coming to China

Summer Blockbusters: 8 Must-See Movies Coming to China
Jun 09, 2015 By Trey Archer , eChinacities.com

Unless you’ve been sleeping under a rock for the past few months, you’ve probably heard of The Avengers: Age of Ultron. In fact, the superhero box office hit opened the second biggest weekend take in China’s film history (number one was Furious 7), raking in 156.3 million USD in just six days. Wow! But don’t worry, if you missed the Avengers and you’re not in the mood to check out Mr. Deng [Xiaoping] Goes to Washington, there are still numerous other much-anticipated flicks coming out this summer that you’ll definitely not want to miss.

1) Jurassic World

China release date: June 10, 2015

Can you believe it has been 22 years since the original Jurassic Park (1993) came out? A lot has happened in those 22 years, and Jurassic Park finally turned into a real life, full functioning dinosaur theme park. However, with declining visitor rates and corporate share-holders losing their patience, John Hammond (owner of the attraction) decided to take a risky move to regain its popularity. As you can probably already imagine, there are insane special effects and loads of Mesozoic-style destruction.

2) Minions

China release date: August, 2015

They’re cute, they’re cuddly, and they’re the complete opposite of human-hungry dinosaurs. Evolving from single-celled yellow organisms that appeared on Earth in the beginning, the Minions have seen it all and witnessed some of the planet’s greatest events. Without a master and being isolated in Antarctica, the Minions became depressed, but Kevin came up with a plan to change the group’s fate. Minions is a spinoff from Despicable Me (2010) and Despicable Me 2 (2013), and if you stuck around for the ending credits of Despicable Me 2, you probably noticed the foreshadowing of the Minions getting their own movie when a few of them were seen humorously auditioning for this film.

3) Mad Max: Fury Road

China release date: TBD

Justin Chang from Variety says in his review that Mad Max is “The sort of exhilarating gonzo entertainment that makes even the nuttier Fast and Furious movies look like Autopia test drives.” The film takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where Immortan Joe began enslaving survivors. However, all the action began when group of prisoners with an escape plan teamed up with Max to flee the desert penitentiary.

4) Terminator Genisys

China release date: TBD

If having another Jurassic Park this summer wasn’t enough, the movie gods decided to give us another Terminator. In the year 2029, and John Connor was leading the human resistance in his battle against the machines. But with the discovery of time travel and on the brink of winning the war, Connor sent one of his top lieutenants back in time to try and save his mother. Unfortunately for them, the past was very different from the way they remembered it, and there were new enemies that puts the T-800 and T-1000 to shame… Get ready for the T-3000!

5) Mission Impossible – Rogue Nation

China release date: TBD

In this fifth installment of the Mission Impossible series, secret agent Ethan Hunt is back at it with insane stunts, gadgets and lots of explosions. With the Impossible Mission Force (IMF) against a threat of rogue operatives that no one knows anything about, Hunt assembled his own team of top agents to save the very existence of his courageous crime-fighting organization. Like all the other Mission Impossible films, it is the epitome of action.

6) Tomorrowland

China release date: May 26,2015

This Disney film starring George Clooney was one of the most anticipated sci-fi flicks of the summer before its release. (FYI, Tomorrowland has already been released in North America, but has performed lower than expected at the box office). When a boy genius and young girl mysteriously got transported to a place called Tomorrowland (a world far off in distant space time), they quickly discovered that their actions affected not only those around them, but the entire fate of humanity.

7) Fantastic Four

China release date: TBD

Another super hero film to give The Avengers a run for its money, the Fantastic Four is back and better than ever! After four ordinary kids gained superpowers after a trip to an alternate universe, they had to figure out how to use their powers to save the planet from a former friend who turned evil (no spoiler alerts). Based off the original from Marvel Comics, this edition is said to be based more off science than the previous ones.

8) Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon II: The Green Destiny

China release date: 2015 (TBD)

And last but certainly not least, we decided to end our top movie list of 2015 with one of the highest grossing Chinese films ever to sweep the West. With incredible kung-fu fight scenes performed by flying acrobats, all surrounded by images of mysterious ancient China, expect this one to leave you on the edge of your seat. On another note, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon II will be the first film ever to be released on Netflix the same time it’s featured in IMAX theaters across the US. So if you want to save a few hundred Yuan, get your VPNs up and running and make it a stay-at-home-movie-night.

I watched the first Jurassic Park movie in IMAX a year ago and it was heavily neutered.... the one good scene of the guy on the toilet getting eaten by the T-Rex was entirely cut out. Having watched Jurassic World a few days ago I'm pretty surprised that they didn't do the same thing for that. The stuff that makes the movies good was all there, which makes me curious if there were any good bits cut out. If you paid attention to the books or the original movie then you can pick up on some continuing themes from the other movies... The whole chaos theory component represented by Ian Malcom in the first movie still made it into a scene where the computer room worker had a bunch of dinosaur models on his desk and said it's a "stable system" but accidentally knocked it all over with his soda, pretty much foreshadowing that the dinos will be escaping all the designs of man and go wild. That quirky DNA animation was there too, as well as an illusion of that poison throwing dinosaur... There's a lot more examples of throwbacks in the movie but I won't let them out here. Funny thing about the movie is that they turned the genetic biologist (or whatever he is) Henry Wu from a clean, fresh faced professional to a much older, corrupted looking scientist who's done a lot of backroom deals.

Mad Max was actually banned recently, and won't be released in China. Looking forward to seeing Jurassic World this weekend, hope it brings back fond memories of the original Jurassic Park experience.

I'm out of the entertainment loop, but happened to see a bootleg dealer a couple of days ago and bought several of these DVDs, including Mad Max. I've bought DVDs from the same dealer a few times in the past, and all have been of decent quality. So much for Hollywood security, and for IP.

Hahaha... Fine, I will tell you what to watch! You are watching those cry-baby soap operas and those ripping-apart Japanese dramas... and you will like it!
