Photographer Criticized for Nude Forbidden City Photo Shoot

Photographer Criticized for Nude Forbidden City Photo Shoot
Jun 01, 2015 By eChinacities.com

A photographer has recently come under fire for his sexy Forbidden City photo shoot featuring scantily-clad models, and nude models.

The photos were taken throughout the Forbidden City, which, as usual, was busy with tourists. One woman is pictured riding on one of the palace's stone dragons.

One of the photos released by the photographer, Wang Dong, on social media, shows a sexily dressed woman leaning over a handrail with tourists nearby. Reports say that Wang's models also posed nude in the Forbidden City.

Wang posted the photos on his Weibo, “WANIMAL,” on May 17. The photos, tagged with “Forbidden City,” and “Ming Tombs,” caused a huge controversy online.

Netizens called the photos, “profane,” and “immoral,” and asked, “Is this even allowed in the Forbidden City?” Many saw the photos as a desecration of Chinese culture.

Wang responded that the creation of nude photos is nothing new and that there will always be “some who do not understand expression.”  He later added in an interview that he was just doing his work and did not affect anyone.

Wang graduated from the Central Academy of Drama and now studies in the United States. His photography work often features the nude female form.

Wang said, “I only post my work online, nowhere else,” and said that not all of his work depicts nude women.

According to Beijing News, Wang has shot nude photos in a number of locations in Beijing, Hong Kong, Boston, and other cities.

Forbidden City is sacred. This was an immoral and provocative act.

What is profane is those guys in wedding pictures who dress up like clowns with pink shirts and bow ties looking like idiots, or the others in a gala royal fusilier uniform, that's sacrilege...! Not these beautiful ladies posing their enchantment.

I don't find this artistic at all. This has all been done before and in much better taste. It is as if he has seen some of Spencer Tunick's work on you tube and maybe looked at a few Helmut Newton nudes and then convinced some slapper to get her kit off in a public place in the name of 'art'. The only purpose here is to shock and try to earn a name for himself. Yawn!

The-Final-Say

I applaud the man for his bravery and open minded attitude towards art, and his models too. I appreciate a woman for her natural beauty. She needn't be naked to show but if she is, well that's how God made her and who are others to judge it? It isn't like we were witnessing the photographer and models in the bushes doing crazy things. As I see it, the Museum could charge more money on "model shoot days" and use the extra revenue to help fund the shrinking retirement pensions due to the 1 child per family policy. Use your best natural resources, combined with a bit of historical attraction, make money and appreciate art.

So... Mao Ze Dong destroying nearly every ancient building and relic in China, and encouraging people to dismantle the Great Wall to build their houses - THAT'S not defiling Chinese culture. But the naked female form - WHAT AN OUTRAGE! What would our pure and noble ancestors, who never had sex, think? ----- Dear China, Can you understand why no one, anywhere, gives a rats about Chinese culture?

Maybe it's just me, but I don't really see the problem with scantily clad Chinese girls riding stone dragons.

Right on. But anything a Chinese person produces that is actually good is a "desecration of Chinese culture".
