Mismanaged Sichuan Hospital Diagnoses Man as 3 Months Pregnant
May 20, 2015 By eChinacities.com

A Sichuan hospital accidentally gave a male patient a diagnoses certificate saying he was “three months pregnant.” The man's doctor was ordered to apologize and was fined 3,000 Yuan.

In early May, Liu (pseudonym) suddenly felt unbearable pain in his abdomen and went to Yibin 2nd People's Hospital to get checked out. After an initial examination, the doctor recommended Liu be hospitalized.

Liu spent nearly 4,000 Yuan in his time in the hospital for a number of checks, a CT scan, and a gastroscopy. He was released after six days in the hospital and when he was given his official diagnoses. The certificate he received said that he was “three months pregnant.”

Sichuan Daily reported that a doctor needs the signature of a medical team leader and supervisor on a diagnoses certificate. If Liu received a certificate saying that he was a “pregnant man,” than there are clearly holes in the hospital's management system.

The hospital punished Liu's physician Doctor Yang by making him apologize to his patient in writing, fining him a total of 3,000 Yuan, and suspending him for one month. Doctor Yang was also given an official warning. The hospital will begin an investigation regarding its own quality and safety standards.

Oh, just let me share, each year for health exams for processing my work visa, I hate going in these hospitals. Although it's just a check up, my fear is I will come out worse off than going in. Case in point, the X-ray technician is smoking in the room I am waiting in to be next - I exercise, and my lungs felt clear, but by being trapped with the doctor's secondhand smoke, I was coughing before my X-ray was taken; In the past, I too accidently received a gynecology stamp on my medical form, and when I happen to notice it and pointed it out for correction, they said it was no big deal, it didn't matter! When there was the SARS outbreak, the way everyone around me would cough or sneeze without covering made me so uncomfortable and not want to be in the hospital for my check up. And, when my wife was having our baby, the halls and stairwells were full of nervous men SMOKING away without any second thought, yet, making the air bad for everyone, especially the patients there in the hospital! And, lastly, I had a Chinese friend to go into a clinic for shots (dog bite), and she had to remind the doctor to use sanitary equipment (upon the doc's coughing), and further asked the doctor to be more gentle (after watching her recklessly jabbing an earlier patient, which was disheartening). Okay, so maybe my friend was a wimp - I was just observing.
