European Pees on Cab that Refuses to Take Him Home

European Pees on Cab that Refuses to Take Him Home
Apr 20, 2015 By eChinacities.com

Yesterday, in Wuhan, at 2 am, a very stubborn and most likely drunk European man got into a fight with a taxi driver that resulted in him peeing on the taxi door. The European man was walking and saw a stopped taxi and tried to get in. The taxi driver said that he was waiting to pick up another passenger who had booked the cab. The European man became angry and thought that he was being discriminated against.

Zhang Lina, a reporter, said that she and her French friend Ngarta had been walking down the street at the same time. A passer-by came up to them and grabbed Ngarta by the hand and asked if she could speak Chinese and if she could check out if there had been a misunderstanding between the European man and the taxi driver. At this point, the European man and taxi driver had been arguing for over an hour.

The taxi driver explained what was going on, and Zhang Lina and Ngarta tried to tell the European. However, the European man still did not understand and continued to claim that the driver was discriminating against him. The taxi driver showed Zhang Lina and Ngarta that the European man had peed on the side of his cab during their argument. He had taken a video on his phone. The taxi driver remained calm and cool and asked the man to leave. The passengers who had booked the taxi driver's taxi saw the argument and decided to hail another cab. However, at that point, the driver was not going to take the European jerk anywhere!

Ngarta was finally able to make the European man understand what was going on. However, he was so angry that he refused to give up. The European man and the taxi driver had been at it for more than two hours and had attracted a crowd of onlookers. Police were called to the scene. Finally, police convinced the taxi driver to bring the European home, with a police escort. The taxi driver was defeated, and said disgustedly that he did not want any of the European's money. Maybe that was the European's plan all along! Free ride home!

In every society, it communicate with a language and with words to its understanding. In this case, the word "Europoean" had been adversely interpreted, to some many readers. So, what's all the fuss?

The taxi driver may have a lot of reasons not to take a customer (irrespective of nationality). Some of these reasons are right and some are wrong, but there is no reason for argument with taxi driver just because he does not want to take you. It happened to me many times that the taxi driver did not want to take me (especially after hearing that I just want to go to relatively near place). Was I happy? No. Did I think about arguing? No. What sense it would have ... I just found another taxi. I think the problem in this case is police. If it would happen in my country and police was called so the guy would be detained.

I asked some chinese friends, the few who are able to admit their imperfections, ..why taxi drivers dont stop for foreigners sometimes .. explanation they gave me .. 1 they just dont like foreigners(jeaulosy: they make more money then them, they get our chinese girls..etc) 2 lazy to go someplace a little far or out of his way 3 lazy to try to undertand the foreigner (not considering the foreigners who speak some chinese or just have a map of where he wants to go, or written in chinese

Yes. Taxi drivers sometimes do not take people due to: 1) Being on the way to pick up customer using phone app to book them 2) Having a rest 3) They do not want to go to the place you aim to and in case of foreigners: 4) Expecting having a difficulty to deal with the person 5) Not liking foreigners (some of them) Nevertheless I witnessed that Chinese have the same problems like me so I do not think that the 4 and 5 occurs that frequently. But my point is not about taxi driver proper or improper behavior. It's very hard to prove anyway. My point is that starting at 2 am argument with a taxi driver, last in the argument for a long time and during the argument pee on his car is one of the most stupid things you may do irrespective of your nationality. As majority of foreigners here (except plain tourists) has university degree so the least I would expect that the guy will act normally and if it was so touching problem then raise the official claim with taxi company (not that I would find it too smart idea anyway because what the person wants to achieve ...). I simply want to say that I would expect the person to act with certain dignity. That apparently was not the case and I think the police was supposed to detain the guy.

I speak very good Chinese and I am able to communicate well with any driver. If a driver refuses me, usually it is because he is reserved by another client using the Di Di Che App on smart phones, something that probably should have been mentioned in this article and also to the European guy. No taxi driver has mentioned to me about "stealing women" although I have heard of this. Most drivers will fear I cannot use Chinese and are pleasantly surprised when I can and do it well. Some drivers like to get into political discussions and I avoid it at all costs because political topics never lead to friendship. Most of the time I change the topic to sports and all is well.

Why is it that they have to describe the man as European? Is it of any particular importance to the story?

It is an improvement though. In the old days we used to see headlines such as "Foreigner busted for pimping", "Foreigner executed for smuggling in narcotics" or "Foreigners beaten up at Carrefour in Hunan because of French protesting Olympic Torch routes in their country" and then the xenophobia would spread like wild fire. It could be better if everything would be more specific but it will never be perfect still.

Oh well, I guess they are not so different from young Chinese loudly mocking the laowai in public, assuming that the foreigner doesn't speak or understand Chinese.

How is anyone else suppose to decipher what your meaning of Europe is? Is Britain part of the European Union? Which is Europe? Oh, it is? Then where is your failed logic in claiming it isn't?

We're only European during the Ryder and Mosconi Cups, the rest of the time we most certainly are not!

So why didn't the taxi driver just leave? Did he want compensation because his door was peed on? Holes in the story. Like if he was waiting for people (which taxi cabs almost never do in China), then why wouldn't they just get into the cab and leave? They saw him arguing and decided to get another cab? Since when are Chinese people afraid of arguments? I thought they liked them, like a public spectacle. Doesn't add up.

so many times when I was living in Beijing (even here in Sh but less then in BJ) taxi drivers said no to me .. as they were slowing down and saw I was a foreigner and drove away or right after asking where I wanted to go ... how can taxi drivers be choosing custumers , and that is ok here ??

No, it's not OK. But it's also not a reason to pee on somebody's car ...
