10% of Chinese Students Cheat on their US College Applications

According to a report by CNN on July 1, a number of US university admissions officers claim that up to 10% of Chinese college applicants cheat to get into US universities; common tricks used include submitting essays written by others, fake recommendation letters and phoney highschool transcripts.

An admissions officer at University of Washington said that she was shocked when she examined the documents  of Chinese applicants. Many of the applications were identical, with the name of the applicant being the only notable difference.

Using fake application materials for applying to US universities seems to be on the increase. The number of Chinese students in the U.S. reached 235,597 in the 2012-2013 academic year, the last period for which the figure is available, up 21.4% from the year before, according to the Institute of International Education. That made China responsible for more than one in four foreign students on U.S. campuses, more than any other country.

However, some critics claim that US universities are turning a blind eye to the cheating as tuition fees from overseas students is one of their main sources of income.

They might cheat on admissions, but any University worth it's salt will catch them out on exams. Then you are on your own
