Zhuhai Middle School Holds Weird, Elaborate Ceremony to Inspire Students for High School Exams

The strange and elaborate “Hundred Days Until the Test so Start Working Your Bum Off Already (loosely translated),” ceremony at Zhuhai Middle School No. 7 recently went viral on the Chinese web. The ceremony featured a weird military-esque parade in which graduates from the school who had done well on the “zhongkao,” test for high school passed through crowds of adoring pom pom waving students while standing up in black cars, waving through the sunroofs. The parade also honored the “dark horse,” students who had done outstandingly well in the hundred days leading up to the test. The parade was meant to inspire the young middle school students to do well on the test this year. It is important to note that the high achieving students driven through the parade were wearing shiny gold superhero capes. How much more inspiring can you get?

A handful of spoilsport Chinese Netizens thought that the military inspired parade was “too much.” However, many others thought the ceremony was “powerful,” “lively,” and a great way to help ease the tension of the usually very serious Hundred Days ceremony.

The “dark horse,” students riding in the black cars on parade all held microphones and each gave a few words of advice and inspiration to the students. In the future, the students who do the best in the hundred days leading up to the exam will also be honored as “dark horses,” and receive a limited edition, “dark horse,” T-shirt, a gold cape, and a place in the parade- kind of like prom king, but way nerdier.

I think it is great. Kind of like a pep rally in the USA. But, instead of the big game of football or basketball, it is for scholastic achievement. And, the kids get to have some fun for once.
