No Dung Beetles or Foreigners in Beijing Street Names

The latest random restriction to be issued by the powers-that-be, is that Beijing street names can’t be named after leaders or foreigners. Meanwhile, ‘offensive’ existing street names are to be switched out for homophones.

The announcement by the local government used the example of “Dung Beetle Hutong”, which has now been re-named “Always Shining Hutong”. Both are pronounced as Qianglang Hutong in Mandarin.

According to Xinhua news agency, the new measure prioritizes ancient names and bans the use of Chinese or Leaders’ names, foreign places or modern names.

The report also mentions ‘vulgar’ place names such as streets named after famous prostitutes ,but says that most of them have been replaced with more ‘elegant’ names.
