In depressing news, a video of an elderly man being ignored and run over after collapsing in the street has been doing the rounds on social media this week. The man died at the scene.
In the video, the elderly man is seen collapsing at a crossroads in Yuhan County, Zhejiang Province. In the following eight minutes, over 20 people passed by without helping him; several stopped to look for a few seconds, but then walked off. One woman stopped to try and talk to him and left, apparently to go and tell his family.
A white car then turned the corner and drove right over the man before dragging him several feet. The car stopped when the driver realized there was someone under the car and he got out and called the police.
This unwillingness to help strangers is China is unfortunately common and has done serious damage to the country’s reputation, both at home and abroad. The most infamous case is of course, that of Yueyue, the toddler who was fatally run over twice and left to die by numerous passersby.
Many have now called for a nationwide Good Samaritan law to be passed, that will both oblige people to offer assistance to strangers and make people who wish to sue someone who helped them for medical costs, personally responsible for proving the other party’s guilt.

Ok, let's set beside the fact that they failed to help him or block the traffic. But how the hell you as a driver do not see some body on the street and run him over ? You should either be blind, or be busy calling someone. which makes you offender of law, and so responsible for the people death.

Recourse to the legal and punitive system is not a panacea for abysmal human values. I think we established that during the trial to pass a "children must visit their parents/grandparents at least x times during a year" law... Authoritarianism through and through.

Yup, I think this country has A LOT more to worry about than the spread of Western values. Actually, I am pretty sure in my country, someone would have helped this old guy and probably stand there to block traffic while calling an ambulance to make SURE he didn't get run over. You can call Chinese a lot of things, but a critical thinker would never cross your mind.
