Crowd control systems currently used in Beijing are to be replicated across the country, in the wake of the New Year’s Bund stampede.
Beijing uses a crowd analytics system in major tourist attractions and large commercial areas. The system provides real-time data on crowd density, distribution and flow, and can apparently detect ‘dangerous crowd patterns’.
The system is currently in place in Xidan, Shichahai, Dashilan and Tiananmen with plans to expand.
Many popular tourist attractions have put new measures into place following the Shanghai tragedy in which 36 young people died.
Several festivals and activities around Shanghai and Hangzhou have been cancelled due to safety concerns and last week, the Forbidden City announced plans to cap visitor numbers in peak seasons.
