Government Internet Regulators: VPN Providers ‘Must Obey Rules’ to Operate in China
Jan 28, 2015 By eChinacities.com

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has spoken up about VPN’s after many users in China have reported problems.

Reports of disruptive service with several popular VPN providers have been increasing in the run-up to Spring Festival, with many speculating that it is a targeted crackdown by Chinese authorities.

Wen Ku, a top official from the ministry, said that VPN providers must abide by Chinese laws to operate in the country and reiterated the government’s commitment to the ‘healthy development of the internet sector’- given that the main function of VPN’s is to circumvent the Great Firewall, this seems unlikely.

The MIIT has requested that VPN providers register with the government agency, but so far, none have chosen to do so.

That's the problem. China only wants to be a part of the modern world when they feel like it. @Robk, based on what I've seen recently, I honestly don't think this government wants to develop or move forward. I wouldn't be surprised if hotmail is the next one to go. If this happens, I'll be well and truly screwed!

Where did CCP copy their standard of 'healthy development of the internet' from, Kim Jong-un?

There goes our 200 RMB for VPNs. About a year ago pornhub for some reason was not blocked until I told my friend in Beijing about it. Then it got blocked. xxxbunker is not yet blocked though (and everyone tries it out!). I think they keep some active for themselves to check out.
