Diaoyu Island Restaurant Forced to Take Down Sign

Diaoyu Island Restaurant Forced to Take Down Sign
Jan 28, 2015 By eChinacities.com

A restaurant in Beijing named after the Diaoyu Islands (or Senkaku Islands) has had its sign removed by its property management company because it was deemed too sensitive, according to the Global Times.

The restaurant, located in the embassy district, neighbors several Japanese restaurants and owner Lu said that he chose the name because he wanted to demonstrate his political position to the many foreigners who frequent his establishment.

The restaurant is very patriotically themed- the bar counter is a replica of China’s first aircraft carrier and every item on the menu contains the characters for the Diaoyu Islands.

He took down the sign after the water property management threatened to cut off his water if he didn’t comply.

Lu said that although he didn’t want to remove the sign, he understood the pressure that the property management company is under.

Wow, his bar is a replica of a Chinese aircraft carrier, to show his political views. He obviously supports the view that the islands are China property. I am somehow missing the reasoning to cut him off, when he is supporting the Chinese view on this. So as a patriot, he is told to stop being a patriot, interesting, yet ironic. Did the government actually go inside to talk to him, or did they just simply read the sign and think the worst? I am not going to take sides of who the islands belong to, but dude, you should have kept the name and professed your patriotism, that would have been REAL Face!

The-Final-Say

Now you must understand that most internationals living in here with any amount of knowledge of how some local friends behave and think during patriotic times.... know that it is not wise to enter in the establishments where such patriotism is afoot. Anyone with access to news of the torch runs during the Olympics of 2008, one reason I wish this country never hosts another large scale sports event again, knows that anyone who looked like a French was threatened to be beaten at places like Carrefour, Walmart, and Tesco, simply because of a few antisocial hooligans decided to host demonstrations in their homelands during their own parade routes. Heaven forbid, though, if internationals form their own opinions regarding sensitive topics such as this that go against local people's face. Or how about the CCTV International Host, Yang Rui, who started xenophobia by ranting about "Sweeping out the foreign trash" right about the time a "drunk British male tried to rape a girl in public at an entrance of a subway in downtown Beijing" which coincided with the major 2012 visa policy changes that made many people uncomfortable. Just remember the article last week regarding what has been going on in Beijing where spoiled rich brats in BMWs would jump out of their cars with friends and beat foreigners senselessly simply for being seen with local girls...... The best way to punish a patriot is to cut off his balls in the most peaceful way possible, at his wallet. You do this by avoiding places where racism, patriotism, and hate exist. If someone is interested in going to that fool's eatery, they are excusing antisocial behavior that is unbecoming of a more global society.

Shame. It is so hard to know a Chinese person's opinion on the matter.
