Taxi Strikes Spread Across Country

Taxi Strikes Spread Across Country
Jan 15, 2015 By eChinacities.com

Strikes protesting high franchise fees and third party taxi booking apps have spread across the country as drivers in Changchun Jinan and Chengdu join Nanjing and Shenyang in protests.

The first strike of the year occured on January 4 and the movement has since been replicated in cities across China. Drivers in Changchun and Jinan went on strike on Tuesday, while taxis in Chengdu and Nanchang gathered outside government buildings in protest.

The main reasons for the strike are the high monthly fees that drivers must pay to the cab companies and third party booking apps such as Didi Da Che and Kuaidi Da Che they say have been undercutting them by using illegal cabs.

The strike seems poised to create some changes however- this week the Chengdu Municipal Transport Committee has announced a ban on apps using unlicensed cabs to drive passengers-however whether this will be enforced in the long term is yet to be seen.
