An employee of a restaurant in Henan’s Yuzhou has been arrested on suspicion of poisoning as 41 colleagues were simultaneously hospitalized after eating lunch at Macau Doulao on January 10.

According to a Yuzhou police, an 18 year old employee was detained by the police on January 11  after traces of ‘carbofuran’, a pesticide, were found in the food of those who had fallen sick.

At around 18:00 on January 10, the Yuzhou Second People’s Hospital emergency department received 41 patients, all from the same restaurant. Every department had to get involved in treating the patients, whose symptoms couldn’t be pinpointed as any specific illness.

Police began conducting investigations at the restaurant after being called out by the hospital and found that the pesticide was present in the patients’ food. An 18 year old employee, who had been working there less than a month has been arrested although what led the police to the suspect wasn’t reported.

Carbofuran is highly toxic and its use has been banned on many types of vegetables and fruit trees.
