A Shanghai-based spokesperson from fast food import Subway, announced on December 29 that it will begin an investigation into reports that employees at a Beijing branch of the franchise tampered with expiry date labels, in order to sell out of date ingredients.

According to Reuters, the investigation was prompted by reports in Chinese media that began circulating on Friday. The reports alleged that staff at a Beijing branch of Subway changed the expiry dates on various meat and vegetable products, as well as beverages, so that they could continue to be sold.

Beijing food authorities have also launched a separate inquiry, the spokesperson added.

2014 hasn’t been a very good year for fast food in the capital; McDonalds was forced to change suppliers and temporarily pull most of their meat products from the menu after the Husi food scandal this summer.

That aside, whoever trusts the original expiry date deserves a Rookie China of the Year nomination.

No surprise here. Subway keep the same inspection rate in China as they do with their franchises in the rest of the world. Which means indeed that bosses and employees are free to cut corner wherever they feel like so, including food safety.
