New Cycle Ban on Trains

New Cycle Ban on Trains
Jan 07, 2015 By eChinacities.com

The China Railway Corporation announced yesterday that from January 5, bikes are no longer permitted on trains. The ban has been enacted due to problems with space and bicycles blocking corridors.

This includes folding bicycles.

If cyclists wish to take their bike with them, they must dismantle, pack the bike in a box and carry it on as luggage.

There are also services such as China Railway Express that will ferry bicycles between main cities. According to Shanghai Daily, to transport a bicycle from Shanghai to Beijing will cost around 50 RMB.

"If cyclists wish to take their bike with them, they must dismantle, pack the bike in a box and carry it on as luggage." - Looking at the luggage options for high-end folding bikes like Dahon or Tern, the cost is upwards RMB 2500.00. Not to mention that the luggage is BIG... the whole thing will definitely block the aisles of a train car compared to just having a folding bike naked. China Railway may have just created a new market for luggage manufacturers. I have a question though - would security stop you if you have your folding bike on a sack, just to comply with the rule that you have it packed as luggage? ^-^
