Permits for Foreign Shows to Stream Online

Permits for Foreign Shows to Stream Online
Nov 07, 2014 By eChinacities.com

Continuing on their mission to clean the internet off all ‘wrong’ foreign TV, and with it all fun, Chinese authorities have announced that all foreign shows that are available to stream will have to get a permit before doing so.

TV watchdogs will have to review the foreign TV shows before they are allowed to be put on streaming platforms, causing delays in posting of new shows. Chinese fans, and those of us surviving off China’s incredible collection of streaming platforms that appear to have never heard of the word ‘copyright’, are not too psyched about this.

This new move is not really unexpected. As early as 2012 we have reported on crack downs on foreign TV shows, with more recent changes focusing on quantity and content not even two months ago. Early this summer, the crackdown started to affect shows directly, as The Big Bang Theory, The Good Wife, NCIS and The Practice were banned from streaming websites throughout the country, for a plethora of reasons.

So, does this mean the shows that fail to obtain those "permits" will be able to cut their losses by not being broadcasted by illegal channels anymore? Yeah I can feel the whole profession frowning.

They need to preview what's popular, cos they need something to copy. Everyone knows how truly dismal Beijing TV is. It's considered a joke among younger viewers. They're losing ground badly to Mango and others ... Even their efforts at copying successful Taiwanese and South Korean shows are failures.
