China Eastern Flight Left Hanging in Smog Above Beijing Airport

China Eastern Flight Left Hanging in Smog Above Beijing Airport

Although everyone heard about Aeroflot flight SU200 coming in from Moscow that had to hover in the air for 93 minutes on October 25 while waiting for the smog to clear to land, nobody heard about China Eastern flight MU750 which was coming in from Japan, and encountered the same problem.

However, flight MU750, with nearly 200 people on board, ran into some Chinese-style bureaucracy when attempting to land. It tried to make an emergency landing in Jinan, or in Qingdao, but was rejected from both airports to begin with. In the end, the airplane that was left circling in the air, its gasoline depleting rapidly, managed to change direction and landed safely at Qingdao Airport.

At the time of landing, the plane only had 1520 kilograms of fuel left, enough for an airplane like this to fly for about half an hour; this flight cut it dangerously close.

I was on a 12 hour flight from Canada that circled Beijing airport for two hours, while waiting for President Bush to take off. Although it was over China, it was Bush I was cursing as I worried about how much fuel could possibly be left.

They are lucky the plane didn`t run out of fuel and crash. That would have strained the relations between the two countries horribly. I never heard of delayed landings due to smog. China is always the first in a lot of things, but very few times in innovation.
