A buffet-style restaurant in Wuhan has either thought of a clever ploy to attract women, or is basing their pricing on gender stereotypes and discrimination.

On October 19, Zhou Shuang saw on the internet that there was an advertisement for a “Female Buffet” promotion, and discovered the buffet cost 36.8 RMB per person, but the small text surprised him; men pay 5 RMB more.

He went to visit a week later, together with a friend who is a journalist, and saw that there were a lot of visitors at the time, but most male customers were unaware of the 5 RMB difference in prices. The journalist interviewed a few customers, some of whom thought the price was still cheap, and didn’t mind adding 5 RMB. Others thought it was rather odd to base pricing on gender discrimination, and were embarrassed. However, they did not want to refuse to pay more in front of their girlfriends at the risk of losing face.
