I looked at his webpage at Nottingham. He has lived in the UK since 1985.

Unfortunately I don't think he's been out much since 1985 as his description of early closing shops, punks and football hooligans in the UK may have been right in the 80's but it's a very different place now. That or Nottingham has really changed since I was there ten years ago!

This article is truly pathetic. China is a beacon of cleanliness unlike the cesspools of New York and Paris. And people from western countries are flocking here for the great health care. Let's not forget the enlightened justice system in China where all are treated equally under the law unlike in America where money rules. When you pay people 50 cents to churn out propaganda you end up with garbage like this. Dear CCP, I want to apply for a job as a wumao but I demand wu kuai for each post because they will be more than ten times as convincing as this crap. So everybody wins.

"Foreigners who are able to experience the high-speed rail in China are very lucky. The trains run directly from one station to another, it is a very efficient way to travel". I particularly like this one. Before I came to China, I couldn't imagine trains that go directly from one station to another. I have gotten used to the ones where the driver does a detour between stations so that he can have tea with his auntie. Thanks the Chinese for thinking about us passengers and and going directly from one station to another!

Yes great trains. However, Chinese railway stations and the travelling on Chinese trains has got to be the closest thing to purgatory or hell I've witnessed....the hassle of buying the ticket, stampedes to the gates, souless platforms, people p@ssing from the corridors of the aisle into the bowl, warm beer, rubbish everywhere.......don't start me on the sleeper train!!

If an article includes the words "This is a true fact!", I don't think you need to mention that the author is Chinese. On a side note, I continue to be astonished by what constitutes "professor" status in China.

I have lived in 6 countries for more than 3 years in each. All of them are the "best" and have the "best" of something and "that is why so many foreigners go work and live there". I learned we are all the best and we all suck.

So… A Chinese male’s desperate fantasies about what he WISHES Western people would say. Some of these examples are hilarious. Others are just mind-boggling in their degree of stupidity, denial, and detachment from reality. --- “Law and order.” OK, so last week a forced demolition crew (group of hired criminals who brutalise villagers and demolish their homes while the local government and police are paid off to turn a blind eye, all of which signifies LAW AND ORDER) in Yunnan got attacked by the locals whose houses they were destroying. The crew killed two villagers. Then they got surrounded, tied up, and set on fire. Four died of burning. And that’s not to mention the ear cutting, finger snipping, penis biting, baby flushing, forced abortions, student rape, doctor stabbing, and numerous other commonplace occurrences in Chinese “society”, to which the police say “there is no evidence that anything happened”. You’re a shining example of law and order to us all, China. --- “The War on Drugs”. America’s “War on Drugs” isn’t working, because draconian punishment doesn’t deter drug use. It CAUSES drug use. And according to this article an American (allegedly) congratulated a Chinese person because of China’s equally retarded stance on drugs. We’re all so envious, China. We envy China’s brutal punishments and rapidly escalating drug problem. Wait… what? I’m lost. --- “If you have been on the dirty subways of New York City or the trash-filled alleys of Paris, you will be able to appreciate the serenity and peacefulness of China and Chinese cities.” And then he woke up. And realised he wasn’t in the Tang dynasty, and that China is composed entirely of dirty, trash-filled alleys, whereas Paris isn’t. I guess if you ignored the construction sites, mountains of rubble, garbage everywhere, polluted water, dilapidated buildings, uncivilised people, phlegm and fecal matter, omnipresence of cancer-causing grey dust, and lack of trees, China would be a normal country. But still not really worth boasting about. --- My personal favourite: “The Japanese often admire how much land China has” HAHAHA! Telling fanciful stories about people admiring your size highlights a particular inadequacy. “Oh… China… You’re so BIG!” Chinese people write the most amazing self-parodies (if only they knew what they were writing). --- To summarise this article: The writer has spent years desperately fishing for compliments about his country (as Chinese people are apt to do). Occasionally a foreigner will give in to the constant prompting and say something they don’t mean to make him shut up, and he will treasure their words like jewels for the rest of his life. And write articles about it.

Once you have lived in a place with no law and order or respect for human life, you will realise how safe China really is. I have visited 29 countries, most of them more than once or twice, and have lived for long periods of time in a few of them, and can honestly say that I felt safer in China than in most of them.

There's your problem right there. You have to compare China to a third-world country to make a positive comparison. Unfortunately though, the article begins by citing ENGLAND and GERMANY. The rest of its claims and comparisons are utterly farcical.

China is essentially a third world country, so fair to compare with others, in which case it far surpasses them. I have been to both England and Germany, I do not consider them particularly safe.

So... Your argument is that China is better than other third-world countries. Congratulations - It is. Meanwhile, the rest of us are discussing the article above, which is comparing China to first-world countries, and quoting completely fictitious "foreign" points of view, like "We envy China's law and order" (spoken by no foreigner, ever).

When somebody asks me the classical "Do you like China?" I always reply "It's the best country in the world" and just look at their cheeks turning red of pride. It also saves time and they don't ask anything else.

I doubt seriously that the original article was written by Professor Yao. A quick scan of his UoN personal page reveals that he's lived in the UK since the 80s, and his serious published work tends to be a bit more in depth and academically focused than the content of this piece. It doesn't seem like the sort of thing he would write, although I could be wrong. http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/chinese/people/shujie.yao

It is very well known that no foreigner can understand such deeply complex language as Chinese. Therefore, Chinese can post all the shit they fancy under the radar, as long it's in Chinese. Seriously, they do that all the time. Why do you think most propaganda posters are never translated? There's so much fun in them though.

I have no idea, but it seems unlikely that a Professor of Economics and Chinese Sustainable Development at a Russell Group university would write something like this. As I mentioned before, though, I might be wrong.

"It is very well known that no foreigner can understand such deeply complex language as Chinese. " Uhm, that's nonsense. I'm a foreigner, I first came into contact with Chinese when I was in my twenties, and I can read Chinese newspapers. It takes me a long time, but I can. It's true that Chinese is very difficult to learn to read and write. But let's not exaggerate.

This list fell apart on item number 1, "Law and Order", yeah I envy the lawfulness, fair justice system and efficient police force in China. Also LOL@ at the "train go fast, dumb foreigner go WOW" in number 12, yeah it's not like the Chinese trains are technology ripped straight from the French TGV system. Last, a big fuck you to the original author.

gouxiong, so as not to downgrade something held dearly in many western countries (that being freedom of expression, thought and speech), I am not going to disrespect your opinion that "China excels over the rest of the world in many aspects".
