Rare Siberian Tiger Released by Putin in Russia Flees Across Chinese Border
Oct 10, 2014 By eChinacities.com

Chinese authorities have a new task on their hand (except the need to more vigilantly watch borders, clearly) as a Siberian tiger released by Russian President Vladimir Putin has crossed into China and has gone missing. The animal was allegedly in search of food when crossing the border.

The large cat, Kuzia, is tagged with a tracking device which has been traced to Taipinggou nature reserve in Heilongjiang Province. Kuzia was one of the cats that Putin helped release into the wild in Russia’s remote Amur region last May.

Officials have released cattle into the area to ensure it doesn’t go hungry, potential traps have been removed, and cameras installed to attempt to capture images of it.

Officially, there are less than 500 Siberian Tigers in the wild today, mainly in eastern Russia, northeast China and northern parts of North Korea. None have been spotted in the county where Kuzia is believed to be, although traces of feces and footprints have been found.
