August was a devastating month for China as statistics compiled by the Ministry of Civil Affairs were published yesterday showed that 759 people died from various natural disasters.

Over 57.5 million people were affected by the earthquakes, droughts and floods that have plagued regions across the country this summer and roughly 600,000 people had to be relocated after their homes were destroyed.

Economic losses directly linked to natural disasters have been estimated at 63.3 billion RMB after 9.05 hectares of crops were adversely affected and over 18,000 buildings collapsed.

123 people are still reported missing, many of whom were caught in the Ludian earthquake in Yunnan province a little over a month ago which killed 615 and injured thousands.
