China to Allow Foreign Investors to Set Up and Own Hospitals in 7 Key Regions

The Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Commerce has announced that it will open up for foreign investors in Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Fujian, Guangdong and Hainan to establish fully foreign run hospitals in these seven locations.

Those foreign investors who want to apply will have to go through the Ministry of Health and through the administration of the provinces in which they are applying.

At the moment, there are already two foreign owned hospitals in China, located in Shanghai and Shenzhen, each of which attract between 300 and 400 patients a day.

There still need to be some decisions made whether or not all medicine will be imported and whether or not medical insurance cards will be accepted.

An important reason behind allowing these hospitals to be opened is that participating in the private healthcare sector is expected to alleviate pressure on the existing Chinese healthcare system, especially with such a growing aging population. In about 10 years, the elderly in China will exceed 610 million, which creates some daunting prospects for the system.

I hope this works well, some hospitals just seem to be there to make money and have no regard to patient needs. also some of the doctors don't seem to be competent.. there are some good hospitals in china, but I know from friends the many problems they have getting good and competent medical treatment
