Foreigner Faints on Shanghai Metro: Other Passengers Run Away

Foreigner Faints on Shanghai Metro: Other Passengers Run Away
Aug 21, 2014 By eChinacities.com

A fainting foreigner in the Shanghai Metro caused quite a stir, reiterating once again how scared Chinese people are to help each other following multiple lawsuits and awful stories.

The man, whose identity is unknown, fainted in a metro car, after which all passengers immediately rushed away, without a single one attempting to help the man.

At the next station, they were so outrageously eager to get off the train and out of the station that a man tripped in the stampede and a woman slammed into a partition. Once the train was empty, employees went in to help the man but he had already regained consciousness and got up and exited the metro by himself.

My fiance told me about this story. Here in China if you stop and help someone who is hurt they may very well claim that it was you that hurt them and demand that you pay their medical bills. There have been enough horror stories on the news here that everyone is paranoid of getting taken advantage of. The other thing is maybe they thought this guy had some contagious disease. Throw those two factors together with crowd mentality and viola, a stampede. Anyone who wasn't within a couple of meters of the guy just assumed that the other people running from him knew something that they didn't.

A path to the victim was cleared. Transportation officers were able to make a quick assessment and the victim recovered on his own.

We have a recent Ebola and other viruses spread in several countries although not China, have any of you including the writer for this article consider the possibility that people are running away because of that ?

A guy faints which is quite common, so everyone simultaneously thinks he has a disease that doesn't exist in China and runs in a blind panic for the door? I suppose anything is possible but it still doesn't say much for the people on the train. People, don't drop your ice cream in the Shanghai subway, people might assume it's an avalanche.

I actually understand people not wanting to help, I don't condone it but I do understand. There are too many people in China who will try to extort money from you and when you have judges that say the only reason somebody would help others is if they caused the accident well... now people are scared to help others. What I don't understand though is people running away in blind panic. What were they scared of? just because the first one to panic is an idiot doesn't mean the rest of the people in that car have to blindly follow.

That has left me dumb struck. Isn't it human nature to atleast go and check if the man is alive or died. What has happened to humanity!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QudX2ARq13k I am in no way excusing the heinous behavior of the people on that train, but I want to point out to people that the US is no different, especially when it comes to poor people of color. Click the above link and you'll see the actual video of a woman who died on the floor of a New York hospital emergency room while several people sat and watched and did nothing. The most appalling is when the security guard came and looked and... did nothing... walked away. So when it comes to indifference, I think we should not be so quick to condemn. Chinese used to help people in need all the time. But thanks to idiots out to scam money, fear has replaced any sort of good samaritanism. The world in its entirety is a cruel, indifferent, cold place. It may not show itself in the same way in all places, but it's there.

The logical conclusion of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics in action. Any questions? The Joker described it best to Batman during a scene from the Dark Knight movie, "Don't talk like you're one of them! You're not... even if you'd like to be. To them you're just a freak, like me. They need you right now, but when they don't they'll cast you out, like a leper. See, their morals, their "code"... it's a bad joke, dropped at the first sign of trouble. They're only as good as the world allows them to be. I'll show you - when the chips are down, these, ah, "civilized people"? They'll eat each other. See, I'm not a monster. I'm just ahead of the curve." ;)

I'm shocked that the Chinese people, confusious BS and all, would leave this poor guy unattended. What if he had died?
