China to Crack Down on Illegal Dual Citizenship

China to Crack Down on Illegal Dual Citizenship
Aug 20, 2014 By eChinacities.com

China is to begin cracking down on people holding dual citizenship illegally, according to the Global Times. The reasons given for the renewed focus on dual citizenship was the ever informative, ‘anti-corruption’.

The Ministry of Public Security has set up an online platform for tip offs and has been encouraging people to inform on anyone ‘suspicious’. They will also be imposing heavy penalities: those who obtain foreign citizenship and fail to cancel their Chinese hukou could potentially be barred from leaving China.

The increased restrictions will deal a strong blow to ‘naked officials’ who work for the government as it will be harder to conceal families and assets, stationed abroad and registered under dual citizenship.

For many though, the move will force many to make some tough decisions- regarding whether the stress and uncertainty of having to apply for a visa to visit your home country will be worth the opportunity of a new life abroad.

I've experienced some minor issues holding two passports. I'm a US/Canadian dual citizen. The US government allows but does not encourage it is as a matter of policy due to the problems that may arise from it. Luckily I'll never face being barred from either country like the Chinese government is threatening in this article.

people can hold citizenships of any, and of as many countries they like. not everyone with citizenship will go on to naturalization - at which point indeed passports are exchanged... holding a second id card (which is what 90% of these people have - *not* second passports) is not illegal under chinese law.
