Taking Control: Xi’an Limits Daily Divorces

Taking Control: Xi’an Limits Daily Divorces
Aug 18, 2014 By eChinacities.com

Xi’an Chang’an Local District Government has adopted a “limited number” policy with regards to divorces, with a maximum of 15 couples divorcing per day. The goal of this is to save those ‘blindly’ divorcing and eventually lower the ever-increasing divorce rate. Although this “limited number” policy has lead to a lower than usual divorce rate, the reasonability of it has caused controversy.

According to the Marriage Law of the People’s Republic of China, divorce shall be granted if both parties agree. The government has no place to intervene in this case, which means there are suspicions that this new “limited number” regulation is actually illegal and a violation of basic human rights. Rather than forcefully “limiting” divorce, there should first be appropriate mediation and conflict resolution.

In a country that holds on to the failed tradition of arranged marriage, letting parents choose a marriage partner for their kids, they can only expect more divorces. My wife was, and 2 of her sisters are in unhappy marriages, always in arguments with the mother-in-law, and even physical abuse from the husband, because they let their father tell them who he thought they should marry. Although he wasn't forceful about it, they felt obligated to obey his wishes. If the kids would just refuse, ignore the parents and focus on finding/being/staying with their "true" love, they'd have a better chance at a long marriage. But not only do most give in to the parents' wishes to marry, 8 or 9 mos. later they pop out a baby, also at their parents urging. This push to quickly produce a grandchild of course is believed to keep the loveless couple together. It's also of course to brag about to their peers, especially if the child has a penis. Although everyone walks around with Smart phones and pads, most still haven't learned from their own culture's Romeo and Juliet-like tales, the Butterfly Lovers or the Peacock Lovers. Interference by parents in matters of the heart, usually don't result in a happy ending.

I see an opportunity. I see money. Money for officials. Not a little. A lot.

I imagine a couple in Xian Her: "Gaaahh, I can't take it anymore, we are always mad at each other ! We divorce !" Him: "Huuu, maybe that's the right thing to do" ... go the divorce office ... Her: "Damn, it's closed, the quote is reached, we can't divorce for at least a month" Him "Ayyaaaaaa, what we can do ?" Her: "Whatever, let's not divorce, we will fix everything" ... and they were happy until the end of their days ... How likely is it to happen ?
