A Nanjing police officer was astonished last week when a driver tried to negotiate a student discount on a fine he gave her, after she ran through a red light, almost hitting an elderly woman in the process.

Officer Chen flagged down the car and was surprised to find that the driver was totally unrepentant about what she had done; instead she complained that Officer Chen had nearly scratched her car.

When he pointed out that she had run through a red light and nearly flattened an old lady, the girl replied, “So what? It only changed for a few seconds,” and pulled out her various documentation including her student card identifying her as a masters student at a nearby university.

Chen gave her a 200 RMB fine and deducted 6 points from her license. The girl protested and tried to ask him for a ‘student discount’ of 50 percent, then tried to negotiate to 30 percent, after Officer Chen, completely dumbfounded, refused.

After being taken to the police station to be‘re-educated’, the girl has apparently accepted the fine. Hopefully she will have learned her lesson, but Nanjing pedestrians should be on the lookout nonetheless.
