Two Canadian citizens are being investigated by the Liaoning Dongdan National Security Bureau for stealing state secrets, Xinhua News Agency reported today. The two- identified as Kevin Garrat and Julia Dawson Garrat- are under suspicion of illegally accessing top secret classified information regarding China’s national defense and military.

The couple had previously worked as teachers in South China before opening a coffee shop near the Yalu River that forms the border between China and North Korea in 2008. Besides serving food and drinks, the couple also helped to arrange tours to the secretive country. The current whereabouts of the couple is unknown.

The investigation comes just a week after Canada lodged a formal complaint with Beijing after Chinese hackers were caught attacking a key national security network.

Three things happened here that came together by chance. If all 3 didn't events didn't come together I think this event would not have made headlines in Canada. Event # 1) China gets caught spying on Canada. CCP must save face by retaliating "Let's get some Canadians". #2) the Canadians in question are devout Christians. (we won't discuss that here) The law prohibits teaching religion. #3 They opened a business. This is the biggest reason this couple was specifically targeted. They refused to give a big red envelope to some gov't official.

I have never come across so many unprofessional, badly behaved Canadians anywhere as I have in China. Canadians are ruining the good reputation they once had. Many of the bad ones are coming here. I'm not surprised by this event at all.

NanNingJay, I am not sure about whether these two are guilty or not but my comment is primarily based on most other Canadians I have met in China. Just my personal experience.
