The creator of a virus which has been spreading like wildfire and attacking nearly a million phones has been detained. 19 year old college freshman Li, was arrested on August 2 for illegally accessing personal information and is now held in custody.

When he was arrested by police, he claimed that he merely wanted to “show off his abilities”, and had no criminal intent.

China Telecom, China Mobile and China Unicom users were all attacked by the malware, “XX神器” over the last two days. Luckily, the mobile providers were able to block ‘infected’ text messages from over a million phones and carry out emergency procedures to prevent the virus from being downloaded.

Experts are now advising users who have already gotten the virus to uninstall it by heading to “Settings”-- Applications -- Application Management, then select “com.android.Trogoogle” and “XXX神器” and press “Uninstall”. The phone will then check for confirmation. Click “Yes” and the malware will be uninstalled.

The virus targeted only Android systems and was spread through text messages, purportedly from contacts in the address book. The text message would read: XX (The contact’s name), then suggest that they click on a link.

Within 3 seconds of clicking on the link, the virus would be downloaded onto the phone and it would start sending identical messages to all the contacts on the phone. The phone would appear to operate normally, while in fact the virus controls the back end of the phone, allowing access to all the personal information on the phone.
