The Ebola virus (formerly known as Ebola haemorrhagic fever) which started out in the western Africa area, has been spreading widely, causing heightened global awareness of the disease. Hong Kong received one of the first cases, and one patient is now quarantined for observation.

The female patient started to show symptoms of fever, headache and cholera after she returned to Hong Kong from Kenya. The patient is now under observation in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and is in a stable condition.

The Ebola virus is a severe, virulent disease; symptoms include fever, malaise, body aches, headaches and throat problems. Vomiting, diarrhea, allergic rash and functional problems with kidney and liver might also appear. Under certain conditions, there might be internal and external bleeding.

There is no specific treatment for Ebola disease, which has an incubation period of 2 to 21 days.
