Beijing is on extra safety alert and has added further security measures on subway lines, in the form of sniffer dogs. The clever canines have been trained to sniff out traces of gasoline-a banned item on public transportation- and will be deployed at subway stations around the city.

12 of the dogs will be on duty initially, but this will increase around particularly sensitive times, such as the 2014 APEC summit, scheduled to be held in Beijing in October.
