Construction worker Wang, thought he’d got lucky when he found what he thought was valuable jewelry on the floor whilst cleaning up after a job. What he’d actually picked up was a piece of highly radioactive Iridium 192 encased in a chain. Wang however, was blissfully unaware and put it in his shirt pocket to keep for later.

A huge panic ensued when the Hongdi Engineering Testing Company realized that the radioactive material was missing and Wang, realizing what he’d done, wrapped the Iridium in a plastic bag and threw it out into the grass near his home.

He later got sick and was hospitalized due to his exposure to the radioactive chain. The chain was later retrieved after teams spent hours searching for it dressed in radiation suits and tagging out every three minutes to minimize exposure.

Exact details of Wang’s condition and how the potentially fatal radioactive material came to be casually lying on the floor for anyone to pick up is yet to be disclosed.
