Shanghai Woman Skives off Work, Caught out by Own Wechat Posts, Gets Fired

A Shanghai woman who tried to sue her employer for unfair dismissal was caught out - by her own Wechat posts.

The woman had gotten time off under false pretenses and then gone travelling to Australia and around mainland China. On her return, her boss fired her and she tried to sue. However, she tripped herself up as she had posted detailed photographic evidence on Wechat of her entire trip; evidence which was later used in court to get her case thrown out.

Vice Director of the Huangpu District People’s Court, Judge Jin Minzhen said that there’s been a marked increase in social media posts used as evidence in recent years, particularly in cases of employer discrimination as people seem to be forgetting that when they post online, they’re essentially leaving a convenient trail of evidence documenting their lives for the whole world to see.
