A man in Xinjiang became a local legend recently after fighting off a wild bear. He was injured but not too seriously despite being bitten 15 times. Ma Xiaolong is now being revered as a hero.

42 year old Ma collects jade from the Maneisi River for a living. On April 28 he was walking along his usual mountain route when he spotted some jade on the floor. When he crouched down to pick it up, he looked up to see a brown bear standing a few meters in front of him. It roared and rushed towards him.

Ma, knowing he couldn’t outrun the bear, stood his ground. The bear sank his teeth into Ma’s left leg and Ma scrambled to find a rock to fight the bear off with. Ma repeatedly bashed the bear in the head with the rock whilst the bear continued to attack him. Eventually, the bear gave up and ran away.

Ma believed that if the bear had kept going for a little longer, he wouldn’t have been able to keep fighting it off, and would have been done for.

A local Kazak herder was slightly less impressed, commenting that the bears at this time of year are usually weak and hungry from hibernation and that the bear must have been an old bear for Ma to have survived.
