Chengdu Wedding Parties Plagued by Elderly Hongbao Snatchers

Chengdu Wedding Parties Plagued by Elderly Hongbao Snatchers
Apr 28, 2014 By eChinacities.com

Recently in Chengdu, a popular spot for couples to take wedding photos has been plagued by old people snatching money from newlyweds.

According to Chinese traditional culture, it’s customary to share some of the money you accumulate from the wedding hongbao with your relatives and members of your wedding party by throwing several of the red envelopes stuffed with cash behind you (kind of like a bride tossing a bouquet in a Western wedding).

Several opportunistic elderly residents of Hejiangting have been trying to cash in on this tradition by gate crashing wedding parties and snatching the money as it’s thrown out to relatives. There have been reports of gangs of dozens of old people hanging around the area.

The Chengguan have been called out to deal with the problem, but apparently aren’t able to do anything, as what the old people are doing isn’t against the law. Although there have also been reports of the old people forcibly taking the hongbao from the couples’ hands, the septuagenarian gang are ‘too quick’ for the Chengguan, thus there is absolutely nothing they can do about it.

These old people are the worst of its kind in China.Thet think they are right all the time.I wont say they are like kids. They are really kids with very low iq. As you know ehn you got older your iq level decreases. But i think in china iq decrease speed is tripled so when they are old ,they are brainless with rude attitude.

Over doing things is epic in china and we constantly seeing them everyday in our daily life in this country, like the story of respecting old people in china to the point that's ridiculous…some of course take advantage of that.

Fill the hongbao with an IOU instead of cash. Give the actual cash out later. Problem solved. It's pretty sad that it has to come something like this though.

The feelings of entitlement are strong in these people. "I'm old, so I deserve everything, even things that aren't mine. Now, get out of that seat and let me sit down." I tell them to kiss my butt at that point and say "learn how to say please."

Stupid old farts. No respect for anyone. They should fill the envelopes with anthrax.

the amount in the envelope is too low to be considered a crime (500yuan in most cities, counties and below. 2000yuan in some of the big four)
