Panda Misses Friend, Gets Depressed so Zookeepers Install a TV in Her Enclosure

Panda Misses Friend, Gets Depressed so Zookeepers Install a TV in Her Enclosure
Apr 15, 2014 By eChinacities.com

Scarlett and Mercedes the Giant Pandas had been living in Yunnan Safari Park together since their panda sanctuary was damaged in the 2008 Sichuan Earthquake. Recently Mercedes was returned to her home in Sichuan and zookeepers noticed an immediate change in Scarlett’s mood; she was ignoring her handlers and barely touching her food, even her favorite steamed corn bread.

Her handlers knew that it was because she missed her friend so they tried to think of ways to cheer her up. They installed a swing, monkey bars and a TV set to play videos of her and Mercedes’ fondest memories together in hopes of lifting her mood.

They also placed a model panda where Mercedes used to sit to trick Scarlett into thinking she had company. The zoo keepers hope that she will be in better spirits in time for peak season.

You can say that again, JanShanghai. However, I am not appreciating them locking up animals in cages for profit purposes. I just appreciate them putting effort into cheering up a sad animal who was parted from her friend. It is better that way than do nothing at all, don't you think?

Um no, it's not cool. A television for an animal?? Sitting in front of a picture machine to drone out the solitude and boredom? It's what depressed people do, and now we are making it "OK" for the animals in captivity. So we can maintain profits in ticket sales! OH dear! The panda is depressed and nobody wants to pay to see a sad animal. THEY'RE ALL SAD!! Here's an idea: STOP LOCKING UP ANIMALS FOR OUR OWN ENTERTAINMENT. They are living creatures and deserve the same respect as human beings.

30 minutes of the family-feuding, Japanese-slaying, weeping, song & dance drivel that is CCTV, and poor panda's gonna need Prozac.
